The African American History Bowl '08

Westbury Middle School champs win Scholarships

Briana Castro and Shannon Mitchell of Westbury Middle School each received $500 scholarships from the Long Island chapter of the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. These young ladies took first place at the annual Long Island African-American History Challenge sponsored by the 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc. This year’s competition was held May 3d at the Nassau Community college campus. Castro and Mitchell subsequently competed in the national challenge held in Orlando, FL at the annual conference of the 100 Black Men of America. The 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc. is part of an international organization of men committed to improving the quality of life in their communities. Their programs focus on Health & Wellness, Education, Economic Development; and Mentoring. The African American History Bowl '05

Bay Shore, Wyandanch students win 8th Annual African American History Bowl

Students from Bay Shore Middle School and Wyandanch High School were the winners in this year's African American History Bowl competition, sponsored by 100 Black Men of Long Island.

The academic competition, held March 5 at Newsday, was open to students of all backgrounds and tested their knowledge of African American history and culture.

Bay Shore's Matthew Hutchinson and Angel Garay and Wyandanch's Edwin Robinson and Kevin Lamb were the winning students in the fast-paced, head-to-head competition between schools. Each received $500 scholarships for college tuition and expenses and is eligible to participate in the national competition in June during the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. annual conference in New Orleans.

Deja Vu, Power 105.1 FM air personality, hosted the junior high school competition. Fellow Power 105.1 FM air personality Cherry Martinez hosted the high school competition.
